Glass table tops have been in style for decades now, and can add a touch of modernity and elegance to any space. They work well because they do a good job of passing and reflecting light to create a sense of larger space. They can be customized to include textures, shapes and colors, or left completely transparent for a seamless look. To complete the table, you’ll need a table base that is as beautiful as it is sturdy, since it will be visible through the glass. In this guide we’re going to go over a few options that may work to adapt our other bases for use with glass or create a unique, custom option that fits your style.
Use Our Glass Top Adapter
Our glass top adapter is a machined aluminum disc that is made to match our stainless steel table bases such as the RFL and RSQ series bases. The disc is 220mm in diameter (just over 8.5”) and includes the necessary hardware to attach it to our table bases. You can read more about how the adapter works here, but the simple version is that it creates a broad, flat surface that you can glue to the underside of your table. The adapter then bolts onto the top of compatible bases, creating a strong connection from the bottom of the base all the way up to your table top.
Make Your Own Glass Top Adapter
If you’re looking at a table base that does not work with our glass top adapter, you just need to find a way to add a broad, flat surface to the top of the base so that there is enough surface area for the epoxy to properly bond to your glass. Please note that when using our glass top adapter or your own custom solution, Tablebases.com recommends you consult with a professional and consider hiring a contractor or glass table fabricator to do the installation for you.
You can make your own glass top adapter out of a variety of materials, including aluminum, steel, and marble, but the simplest material to use is wood. The size of the piece you make should cover the top of the table base completely (and can be larger than that if you prefer). This option allows for a lot of variety in your design and budget. You could use a reclaimed piece of marble from an old table top, or cut a new piece of wood stained to match the rest of your interior decor.
You can then glue your home made adapter to the bottom of your glass – just like our adapter – and then place the entire assembly on top of your base, and attach the base to the wooden adapter with screws. With this method, you’ve essentially created your own glass top adapter that you can customize to match the look of your space.
Create a Hybrid Wood & Glass Table Top
If you want the durability and elegance of glass, but are afraid a completely glass table top won’t work for your need, you can try placing a large piece of glass on top of a new or existing wood table top. This works very well because you get to look through the glass and see a beautiful hardwood table, but you get all the durability and reflective benefits of glass.
