The idea of having communal tables in restaurants is gaining traction in America, QSR magazine reports. Rather than having smaller, individual tables, some full serve restaurants have been using larger, communal tables where guests can interact with each other. Now it appears that some fast casual restaurants are adopting the trend, and seeing great results.
As QSR magazine points out, having communal tables work out well for quick-serve restaurants, where patrons are typically in and out in a short amount of time. No matter what style of restaurant, larger, shared tables can help create a sense of community, transforming your restaurant from a simple place to eat, into a gather place. That kind of attitude can do wonders for brand affinity. The idea may not work for every establishment, eateries with more subdued atmosphered may be better served by private tables. QSR quotes Tina Spaulding, principal at Shea Design in Minneapolis, who notes that communal tables "work best with the brands that are a little more energetic".
