A Santa Barbara based Biotech company, Apeel, has created a protective coating that can extend the shelf life of fruit and prevent it from spoiling, according to Grub Street. The all-natural, edible, "undetectable" coating is made from leftover plant materials that deter fungus, bacteria and insects.

The length by which you can extend the life of fruit depends on the type of fruit, as there are different coatings for different varieties (eg there is an apple coating, strawberry, avocado, etc). GrubStreet cites an example where avocados can sit for 30 days longer, or variable coatings that allow fruit to ripen gradually, like individually coated bananas. Not only does this help keep fruit fresh on your shelf longer, and protect fruit in transit, but the creators also aim to reduce the amount of food that gets thrown out and to help end world hunger. Some estimates say that America wastes about $165 billion dollars of food every year.
