The US Food and Drug Administration has recently launched Twitter account @ FDAfood specifically to broadcast food related information regarding "updates on food, nutrition, additives, dietary supplements, and the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act". Any Twitter user can follow the new FDA account.
The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is a network of preventative measures put in place in 2011, which the FDA can initiate across the United States, with the goal of systematizing farming, production and distribution in order to minimize the risks of a food related crisis. FSMA also allows the FDA to detain products that it, reasonably, deems to present a serious risk to people. Technology and globalization have created a challenge for the FDA, with food supplies entering the country from all over the world and by various means of transportation, this significant policy update gives the organization new power and responsibility when it comes the task of monitoring potentially harmful pathogens in food and drug products. This shifted regulation will purportedly help prevent dangerous food outbreaks before they occur.
The FDA Food division has put together a short video that provides an extremely simplified version of the regulations, so simplified in fact that we recommend reading the full reports to learn all the details.
