Chipotle has typically been ahead of the game in terms of progressive policies versus their competition, and the burrito chain has just dealt another blow to American fast food restaurants. Starting today, Chipotle has announced that all of the ingredients in the food they serve are GMO free. According to the AP, their menu was largely GMO free anyways, except for a tortilla.
Chipotle has been labeling GMO foods on their menus since 2013, shocking for a fast food restaurant, especially considering GMO labeling laws have struggled to pass in many states. The restaurant seems to be listening to their customers, taking strong anti-GMO, anti-antibiotics, and pro-sustainable food positions. From Steve Ells, founder and co-chief executive of Chipotle, as interviewed by the Times: "This is another step toward the visions we have of changing the way people think about and eat fast food. Just because food is served fast doesn't mean it has to be made with cheap raw ingredients, highly processed with preservatives and fillers and stabilizers and artificial colors and flavors."
What do you think, is it refreshing to see a mainstream, fast food restaurant take such progressive stances on the ways in which food is produced? Or is it all hype? Let us know what you think via Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
