Have you ever eaten Brussels sprouts and thought, "These aren't Kale-y enough", or enjoyed a kale salad and wondered, "why aren't these shaped like brussels sprouts"? Well, wonder no more! As Modern Farmer reports, UK vegetable breeding company, Tozer Seeds, has come up with a hybrid brussels sprout/kale vegetable, called the Kalette™ ("Flower Sprouts" in the UK). The produce is the result of a 15 year long process that, fortunately, saw results just as America's kale obsession has reached new heights. While Flower Sprouts have been available in the UK for some time, testing the market, they have yet to make their way over to the US. The challenge, as described by Modern Farmer, was convincing farmers and retailers to adopt the new vegetable without any idea of how consumers would react. After starting small, the product has been received well and is ready to make the leap across the pond. The name "Kalette™" is, presumably, meant to align the new veggie with America's current green obsession. What do you think about the idea of cross breeding vegetables? Is it GMO style weird, or a necessary advance as environmental and population density concerns increase?
