A brand new brewery and grill has set up shop in the heart of Monterey, California, a coastal town about 2 hours south of San Francisco. The Alvarado Street Brewery and Grill (named after the main street downtown) opened in May of this year, and features beers on tap, brewed in house, as well as an expansive dining area. The interior design, which utilized our cast iron K series table bases to great effect, is fluid and inviting, creating a great place to stop and escape Monterey's notoriously foggy weather. Showcasing big, bold images of vintage beer containers, as well as modern touches like metal chairs and bar stools, the restaurant balances the old and new in a coastal town with rich history.
Conceived of, designed by, and managed by retired architect John Hill, the Alvarado Street Brewery & Grill features an elegant design with both modern and vintage touches. The open kitchen shows off the chef's skills (they were cooking artichokes when we visited, and they smelled delicious!) Large, stainless steel brewing tanks, visible through the glass-walled bar area, are stunning and give diners a great peek into the brewing process. By the way, those brews are piped straight from the tanks to the taps, so your beer avoids contact with oxygen until the moment it hits your glass. They are currently brewing an Amber Ale, Porter Chocolate Stout, and Pale Ale.
Before John Hill acquired the space, the old building was originally set to be remodeled into a few retail spaces. Hill convinced the developers that the street level space would be better utilized as a restaurant, with apartments up above. The large, open space features two story ceilings, and a small upstairs are a that overlooks the dining room.
Featuring our K24 and K15 bases, the restaurant utilizes beautiful wood table tops at bar height and dining height, as well as stunning marble table tops for larger groups. These vintage, cast iron bases look great paired with silver metal chairs and long benches, and add to the already great contrast between the open, modern design and other vintage touches.
