A new study by First Data, an international payment processing company, shows that San Francisco's restaurant industry is beginning to edge out New York in terms of overall growth. Eater.com reports that the client data, analyzed between 2013 - 2015, shows that while the cities' dining scenes are both growing in different ways, SF is increasing at a faster rate, with higher overall sales in two of the last three years. Different segments grew or declined at different rates, notes Eater. American and Italian restaurants dominate on both coasts, though the study notes that San Francisco "exhibited more diversity in the types of restaurants". On the West Coast, the number of Asian restaurants increased, as did customer visits. Bay Area Mexican restaurants saw an increase in overall ticket sizes, while both the West and East coast saw a decline in French restaurants (although only slightly, at 0.2% in SF and 0.3% in NY). While San Francisco,  a diverse variety of cuisines are gaining strong footing, in New York the most growth occurring in Cafés, Delis and Pizza establishments. On the East Coast, steakhouses saw the steepest decline. The study's results are interesting, and important for restauranteurs looking to gauge the industry and possibly move into a new sector.
