In a world of food, cleanliness really is next to Godliness. When it comes to restaurants, operators need to maintain certain levels of sanitation, not only to appease regulations, but also to ensure their establishment meets an exceeds their customers' expectations. While it is absolutely a priority to make sure that kitchen and dining areas remain clean, another part of your establishment can say a lot to consumers about the quality of your business: restrooms. Dirty, inconvenient or poorly stocked restrooms send a very negative message to patrons. If you cannot maintain proper levels of sanitation in areas that customers do see, how can patrons expect your kitchen and storage to be clean enough for their food? A clean restroom (along with a clean everything else) tells your customers that you pay attention to details, and care about their comfort and health. The water closet is an essential part of any restaurant. With your customers, hopefully, filling themselves with food and drink, chances are high they will need some relief at some point. I know that personally, I avoid places that are known for their less-than-stellars lavatories, both because that makes for an uncomfortable trip should you need to make it, and because of what it says about the potential disaster in the kitchen. In a fast paced business, it is easy to forget the corners of your establishment. Advice to restauranteurs, make sure you have someone checking on your restrooms regularly. On a busy night, you may have to send someone in several times in one shift to tidy up and make sure items such as bath tissue and paper towels are well stocked. Outside the restroom, make sure to have clear signs directing customers, and well lit hallways or other passages to make them feel at ease. Another tip, leave cleaning supplies in a cabinet in the restroom, so that messes can be cleaned up quickly and discretely, and make sure not to forget little details, such as the corners of the room, light switches, and door handles.
