The Organic Coup
A new restaurant, The Organic Coup, has opened in Pleasanton, California. As reported by Eater.com, the restaurant, owned by former Costco food buyer Erica Welton, claims to be the USA's first USDA-certified organic fast food restaurant. The certification means that 95 percent of more of the ingredients used come from certified organic growers.
The Organic Coup's main menu item is a fried chicken sandwich, also available as a wrap or salad, with popcorn on the side. At the moment, the menu is sparse, but we supposed that is to be expected when you have such stringent requirements for your ingredients. Hopefully as things progress, the menu will scale accordingly with the brand. Welton has proposed some lofty goals for the new organic brand, saying "we're opening 25 locations in the next 14 months". Welton came up with the idea for The Organic Coup after finding herself frustrated with the lack of "clean", "quick options at lunch or on busy weekends". It will be interesting to see if the Coup's all (or at least 95%) organic endeavors strike a chord with Bay Area residents, and if they will be able to get more items on the menu as the number of restaurant location's grows.
What do you think, does a certified organic fast-food restaurant sound appealing, or is the lack of variety on the menu a sign that it's a little too far ahead of the curve? Let us know what you think via Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
