According to the
Centers for Disease Control, as reported by
Restaurant Business Online, the scary Salmonella outbreak that occurred this past fall has spread to include 39 states. Since November 19th, 2015, 50 more people have reported Salmonella related illnesses from 16 states, including two deaths. That brings the total count up to 888 cases, including 6 deaths and 191 hospitalizations. While the frequency of reports has declined, it's still unusual to see cases continuing at this time of year.
Affected produce was imported from Mexico (though the exact source is unknown) and distributed by Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce, and has hit at least four restaurant chains (In-N-Out, Red Lobster, Olive Garden & Capital Gille) as well as supermarkets across the nation. Tennessee is the latest state to be added to the list. The
CDC and the FDA are currently investigating the outbreak to try to determine the origin and true scope. While 6 deaths have been reported across three states (CA, TX, OK), the
CDC notes that "
Salmonella infection was not considered to be a contributing factor in two of the three deaths in CA". As usual with these types of outbreaks, the very young and older segments of the population (or anyone with a diminished immune system) are most at risk.
As
RBO points out, consumers are very wary of food borne illnesses, as 2015 was a reminder of just how little we know about the origins of most of our food.
Chipotle was repeatedly hit with outbreaks and scares, along with other chains.
