  1. Does Google Glass Have a Place in the Restaurant Industry?

9469908782_e264c70515_b Google Glass, a wearable device that connects to a users smartphone and provides information on a small screen above your right eye, has had a tumultuous year since its debut. Early adopters, dubbed "Explorers", were exclusively chosen by Google via Twitter, though the program has since expanded. Those explorers have been testing the capabilities, usefulness and social acceptability of Google Glass for the past year. In a year when American concerns over personal privacy have spiked, the glasses-like device, equipped with a camera, has been ill received in many establishments and communities. Now, some recent projects involving the use of Google Glass in back-of-house operations are showing that the device may have a place in restaurants and bars after all. Continue reading →

  3. Our C14 Table Base at The Third Rail, San Francisco

The Third Rail1 Our customer photos this week come courtesy of Phil West, owner of the Third Rail, a cocktail bar in San Francisco's Dogpatch. This industrial neighborhood has experienced a major transformation in recent years, and is now a bustling area of the city, with butcheries, fantastic small restaurants, and (now) a great craft cocktail bar. A bench is built into the wall across from the bar, creating seating for 8 small, hardwood tables, paired with our C14 Table Base. The tidy bar features mid-century inspired furniture, and some big statement pieces to remind you of the establishments inspiration (the 3rd street rail line). Continue reading →

While coffee shops and some quick serves might have frequent single customers, most people avoid confronting the social stigmas faced when dining alone. 7. Are Restaurant Atmostpheres Getting Louder?

Loud Restaurant If you're someone who dines out, even infrequently, then you have probably experienced a noisy restaurant. Between the bartender mixing cocktails, pans clanging in the kitchen, background music and guests' conversations, the noise level can quickly become overwhelming. The situation can escalate, with everyone in the room speaking more and more loudly, fighting to be heard. We've written previously about Comal, a Berkeley California restaurant that not only installed passive soundproofing materials, but also an active, electronic system to help reduce noise and reverberations in the space. The Boston Globe recently launched an information investigation of the sound levels in a few New England restaurants, and came away with some interesting results, and reasons, for the raising levels. 8. A New Sous-Vide Machine Controlled by Smartphones

Mellow3 Sous-vide, the process of cooking food in sealed bags immersed in circulating hot water, has been a popular cooking method among restaurant chefs for the past several years. Previously, options for using the method at home have been limited to just a few rather expensive options. Recently, however, newcomers such as Sansaire and Anova have developed great options for around $200, and now consumers have a few great choices. However, a new brand has decided to do things completely differently, and has introduced Mellow, a sous-vide machine that is controlled by a users smartphone.  Continue reading →

Screen Shot 2014-04-21 at 11.44.43 AM A few weeks ago we reported on Dinner Lab, a pop-up style foodie organization that provides members with special dinner events in major cities across the US. Dinner lab is also looking into starting a permanent establishment, and almost every detail of the to-be-business is being driven by feedback from Dinner Lab members. Now, prolific crowd-funding website Kickstarter has announced some new subcategories, to better organize and identify the projects of aspiring restauranteurs. As Eater.com reports, the new categories under "Food" include things such as "Food Trucks", "Cookbooks", "Farms" and even "Bacon". Most categories are answers to user requested, while others (namely Bacon), were added just for giggles. Continue reading →

SWITCH, a crowd-sourced online database, rates the city's restaurants based on their sustainability. The website's founder, Gerald Mitchell, wanted to create an easy way for consumers to identify restaurants that exercise sustainable practices. The ratings are not limited to the establishments' environmental friendliness. Rather, it covers everything from the business's recycling practices to how well the treat their employees. In a world of Yelp!, Foursquare, Google listings, and a host of other online resources, does SWITCH have a place, or is it just more noise?  Continue reading →
